I always wanted to be an entertainer from as far back as I could remember. I guess being born and raised in LA can do that to you. My mom always wanted me to be an Entertainer or President, hence the name Camden Michele Singer. She thought Camden Michele had a nice ring to it. True story! My dad said, “I will support you in anything you want to do as long as you get your education first.” So that’s what I did. I received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Colorado and was then fortunate enough to work my tail off waiting tables to send myself off through the South Pacific for a backpacking adventure which began as 3 months and extended to 8 ½ . When I returned home I said, “What the heck? I’ve always wanted to be an entertainer and I was going to live in LA for a bit of time anyway so I’ll give myself one year… If “nothing” happens I’ll apply to graduate school and become an OT, move back to Colorado and live happily ever after. (I hadn’t, though, established what “nothing” meant by this time but my mind was set). I took some headshots and strategically started sending out my pictures and resume to Agencies from those guides at Sam French. Whoever’s cover letter and label matched (ie… spelled correctly, aligned the labels , addressed to the correct gender, etc…) they got a submission package. I know, not too formal. Hey, I was learning.
I signed with my first Agency through that mailing and so it began. A couple of months later I landed my 1st National Commercial with 16 more to follow. 17 Commercials in my first year. Wow! And thankfully I have not slowed down (knock on anything that even resembles a wood product). I guess this is what I’m supposed to be doing. About 8 years and counting. I guess grad school is on hold for a bit. I can live with that.
